Ownership and Independence

Children need to feel as though they are a member of a literate community in order to actively participate in reading and writing activities. When I know my children, I can make book choices for my children to ensure their development and success. I can help them practice ownership and independence during sustained silent reading, small group reading time, and choice time.

Super Readers is an effective way to get my children to see themselves as an important part of our literate community. Every day, five children are chosen to be "Super Readers." These children choose a book and read it aloud to an audience of four to five members. When the reader has finished reading, the audience gives positive feedback. "I'm glad you read that one. It is one of my favorites." "The way you read that made it exciting." The readers then give feedback to the audience. "You listened quietly, thank you." By the end of the week, each child has been able to be a Super Reader. Most children take Super Readers very seriously and plan the book they will read well in advance and practice.
